The cumquat is a fruit of the citrus variety. The cumquat looks like a miniature orange and can be round or oval shaped depending on the variant. They contain vitamin A and C, iron and calcium. When buying cumquats, the best fruit is plump and bright in colour (no green tint) and has a nice firm skin without any blemishes. They will keep 2-3 days at room temperature, but if you want them for longer, it is best to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The tart and sweet flavour of the cumquat makes them a tasty addition to many winter salads. Often the cumquat will be caramelized and used as a topping for cakes, desserts or savour dishes. They also make wonderful marmalades and jams.

There are several ways to eat a cumquat. The first is to eat it like a grape, skin and all. A good way to do this is to roll it between your palms or fingers first, so you release the aromatic oils and ‘mellow’ the fruit. Another way is to cut the cumquat length ways and scoop all the inside out, leaving the peel. Then eat only the peel and discard the inside.
